This presentation centres around inflammatory bowel disease and pregnancy, and the midwifery research undertaken in this area. Women living with IBD are at increased risk of certain pregnancy complications, including preterm birth and having a low birth weight baby, yet there is no national midwifery guidance about pregnancy care. It provides first hand experiences of pregnancy from women living with inflammatory bowel disease, and provide unique insights into what influenced their experiences and what we as healthcare professionals can do to ensure pregnancy care is collaborative, patient centred and responsive.
New midwifery care recommendations for IBD and pregnancy, endorsed by the British Society of Gastroenterology and Royal College of Nursing, will be discussed highlighting the relevance of these to all healthcare professionals caring for women living with IBD during pregnancy.
